Shopian Oct 19 : In a move to protect the health of minors, the District Magistrate of Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, has issued a strict order prohibiting the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to individuals under the age of 18.

 

The order, issued on October 19, 2024, cites the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce

production supply and distribution), Act, 2003, which prohibits the sale of cigarettes to minors.

 

The District Magistrate has emphasized that any vendor found violating this law will face severe consequences. To ensure compliance, vendors are required to ask for age proof, such as an Aadhaar Card, EPIC, or any other identity proof containing the buyer’s date of birth.

 

To oversee the implementation of this ban, the Additional District Development Commissioner, Shopian, has been appointed as the nodal officer.

 

The order has been issued for the information of all cigarette sellers and the general public of Shopian District.
